Address Translation – Microsoft 365
Because Microsoft 365 includes an onmicrosoft.com temporary domain that can be used during migration, special consideration is required to ensure addresses are translated properly.
Microsoft 365 – Target
If a user’s email address will be changed to an email address that is not defined in the Users list after the migration is completed, ensure the Address Translation checkbox is either disabled, or configure a Custom Address Translation Table. In many cases, the onmicrosoft.com temporary domain is used in the Users list during migration in the target email address, but you do not want to translate email addresses to an address that includes the temporary onmicrosoft.com domain.
In this case, the easiest way to ensure email addresses are not translated to the temporary onmicrosoft.com email address is to disable the Address Translation checkbox. When disabled, all email addresses in the target will retain their source address, regardless of what target email address is defined in the Users list.
Microsoft 365 tenant-to-tenant
When migrating between two Microsoft 365 tenants, it’s common to use the onmicrosoft.com domain in the target email address in the Users list, and then after the migration is complete rename those accounts with the production domain. In this situation, configure Transend Migration Console as follows:
In the Users list, define the production domain in the source email address and the temporary onmicrosoft.com domain in the target email address.
If user accounts will eventually retain the same primary SMTP email address in the target that exists in the source, then simply disable the Address Translation checkbox.
Alternatively, in the Address Translation Table you can define the production domain in both the source and target columns, because after the migration is complete you will change the target primary email address from [email protected] to [email protected]. This ensures that no email address are translated to the temporary onmicrosoft.com address, even though it’s defined in the Users list.
